I decided to put together a little "quiz" to go through to see if Ibizans would be a good fit for your home! So, here we go! Make sure to answer as honestly as possible...
Are you looking for a dog who has a mid-high energy level? Ibizans are a mid to high energy breed who needs lots of exercise and opportunities to exert their energy throughout the day. Do you have securely fenced yard or safe place for your dog to run? While not required, having a safely fenced yard is a huge perk in owning the breed. This breed should be given opportunities to run free and be crazy outside on their own free will. Whether you have a fenced yard or a nearly safely fenced park you can take them to, you should have a plan on where you can let your dog run free. Do you want a silly, clownish type of dog who does not take much seriously? Ibizans are fun, silly, HAPPY dogs often described as having a Peter Pan like attitude. This means they are kids forever! They stay happy, silly, and clowny from puppyhood well into adulthood. They think life is a joke! Is not being able to let your dog off lead on hikes, walks, or in unfenced areas a big deal to you? Ibizans are not a breed to be trusted off lead in unsafe areas. Do you mind intense prey drive? Prey drive is deep rooted and genetically engraved into this breed. Do you have an interest to try lure coursing? Lure coursing is a fun activity to try with your Ibizan! I highly recommend checking out coursing if you get a beezer! Are you a serious dog sport enthusiast? If all the ribbons and awards and glory is what you are after, do NOT get an Ibizan. They often like to make fools out of their handlers in the ring! Ibizans are not really a biddable breed. Do you mind having an independent minded dog who is not always willing to please? Like stated above, Ibizan are generally not a biddable breed. They are very smart and trainable, but not traditionally smart like a border collie or Labrador is. Do you mind having a dog who may jump a lot? Jumping, leaping, pouncing, and bounding are all a part of the breed! I think it's part of their charm! Is having a mischievous dog undesirable to you? Ibizan's love to get themselves into trouble! They are curious in nature and that may lead them into some mischief.
Do these traits sound desirable or manageable to you? If you think these dont sound too bad, then you may make the perfect beezer owner! If you are hesitant to answer a few, you may need to reconsider and find a breed that will better suit you!
